Supporting the local economy doesn't just allow money to circulate in your community; it also reduces the number of miles goods travel. Even by choosing to buy a strawberry instead of a banana, assuming that you live in New York City, USA and you purchase both from the leading producer countries of each, you save 4,723 miles of food transport, most of which emits greenhouse gases. In addition, buying produce when it's in season in your area reduces food miles as well.
